CURIOSITY, PASSION, PURPOSE? What do they have in common?

Finding your purpose to live a more fulfilled life is the goal, right? To be happy, better for those around us and loving how we feel at the end of each day. To feel like we are living our best life.

That is what we hear.

But knowing what that purpose is, is not that easy to find is it?

Many of my clients have asked this very question – How do I find what my purpose is?

I believe that people who love what they do, generally will be doing something that helps others.

So finding what we are meant to do will link to knowing more about yourself and how you can help others.

Where you can start:

Think about these things: what lights you up, what are you curious about, what are your natural talents, what skills have you acquired along the way and what are your strengths related to your personality.

Lets start with “what lights you up” – usually this is called passion. What are you passionate about?

Definition of Passion

strong and barely controllable emotion.

Still not sure… let’s swap the word passion for curiosity.

Definition of curiosity

a strong desire to know or learn something.

So take a step back and look at what you are curious about. What are you interested in? Who do you follow on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, youtube.

What books do you read, blogs you follow? What causes do you believe in?

Ahhh… so now you can see, what interests you is often what you are passionate about.

Get it?

The more you learn, the more you want to learn, the more you make time to learn and enjoy these things you are interested in.

“Once we understand what our passion is and we use it in service of others – that is what true purpose is. “ paraphrased from Jay Shetty

Because when we are compassionate and we want to do for others, we will then find that often that equals what we are passionate about.

This doesn’t mean you need to feel like you have to save the world, stop poverty and hunger globally ( although we can all passionately say that we would love to be able to do that) . What it does mean is that we can do something we love which will make a difference in others’ lives. It can start small and be scaled up eventually- but we want to be doing something that means something.

Let’s do an exercise I do with my clients that can assist:

We are going to focus on 4 areas all about you.

PASSIONS/CURIOSITIES- What lights you up, what are you interested in

TALENTS – What are the talents you are born with – natural gifts eg: great sportsman

SKILLS – what have you learned, what do you know – eg: basketball

STRENGTHS – what personality traits do you have eg: compassionate, communicator

Draw up 4 columns and start to add to each area. Feel free to be loud and proud about who you are and what you have achieved. Right now it is okay to be self-centered.

Fill in each column and then go and talk to those closest to you and ask them what they think your talents and strengths are. You will find that many you have long forgotten or are not even aware of. This is one of the best parts of the exercise.

This exercise will give you a clearer indication of what you enjoy doing, what you are good at, and how you can then share that with the world.

Now you know a lot more about yourself and what you love.

Now it is time to find some commonalties among the 4 columns – this way you can start to discover what you want to share with the world.

Remember that the skills column is the one we can keep adding to. Learn as much as you can, invest in building your expertise. What we don’t know we can still learn. Learn through areas like coaching, courses, mentors.

Your purpose could start as a small passion project, side hustle, or small business.

You can decide how much time it will take, but when you are doing something you love which can make a difference you will truly find you are moving toward a more fulfilled life.
